Biodegradation in water: screening tests

Description of key information

Screening for ready biodegradability was performed by the closed bottle test.
(-)-Beta-pinene is readily biodegradable according to the criteria of the OECD 301 guideline.

Key study conducted according to OECD 301 D Guideline and GLP without deviation.

(-)-Beta-Pinene was tested at a concentration of 2 mg/L. The inoculum was domestic activated sewage sludge. Degradation was assessed by measurement of oxygen consumption.

The pass level for ready biodegradability was reached in the required time window within the 28-d period of the test: 76% biodegradation on Day 28. This result can be used as key value for chemical safety assessment.

Alpha pinene and delta 3 carene, which are structurally similar compounds, were also found to be readily biodegradable according to OECD 301 criteria.
