Two short-term toxicity studies with freshwater fish are available for MEKO. A 96-h LC50 value of >100 mg/L, obtained in a GLP-compliant, OECD Guideline 203 study with Oryzias latipes conducted under semi-static conditions with analytical monitoring (Kurume Laboratory, 1998a) will be used in the assessment.

Two short-term toxicity studies with aquatic invertebrates are available for MEKO. The lowest 48-h EC50 of ca. 201 mg/L in Daphnia magna was obtained in a static GLP-compliant, OECD 202 guideline study with analytical monitoring (Kurume Laboratory, 1998c). This value will be used in the assessment.

Two growth inhibition studies with freshwater algae are available for MEKO. A 72-h NOErC of 2.56 mg/L and a 72-h ErC50 of 11.8 mg/L, obtained in a static GLP-compliant OECD Guideline 201 test with Scenedesmus capricornutum (Kurume Laboratory, 1998e), performed with analytical monitoring, are used in the assessment.

One long-term toxicity study with freshwater fish is available for MEKO. The test is a flow-through GLP-compliant, OECD Guideline 204 study with Oryzias latipes with analytical monitoring (Kurume Laboratory, 1998b). The 14-d NOEC is >100 mg/L based on mortality. This value will be used in the assessment.

In a long-term toxicity test with aquatic invertebrates, a semi-static GLP-compliant OECD Guideline 211 test with analytical monitoring (Kurume Laboratory, 1998d), a 21-d NOEC of =100 mg/L, based on the reproduction rate, is reported. This value will be used in the assessment.

In a static freshwater microorganism toxicity study with Pseudomonas putida (BASF Ecotoxicology Laboratory, 1988), performed according to BASF protocols, the 17-h EC10 is 177 mg/L, based on growth inhibition. No data are available on the GLP status and analytical monitoring. A LOEC of =630 mg/L was reported in another study (Meinck et al., 1968), for which only information from secondary sources is available. The 17-h EC10 is 177 mg/L in Pseudomonas putida will be used in the assessment.
