Additional information

The toxicokinetic profile is derived from melamine because both melamine and melamine phosphate have a similar solubility in water (3.5 and 3.9 g/L at 20 °C). Melamine phosphate is a salt and dissociation to a melamine cation and phosphate anion occurs in water.

The available experimental data on melamine shows that it is partly taken up after ingestion and eliminated in the urine without metabolism (Mast 1983, Sugiata 1991 and Liu 2010). This is also supported by investigations on the antineoplastic drug hexamethylmelamine in rat and man (Worzella 1974). In rhesus monkey, with a single melamine dose of 1.4 mg/kg bw, a half-life of 4.41 ± 0.43 h was determined. The Tmax was 2.67± 1.16 h.
