Description of key information

Many high quality studies investigating the acute toxicity of APG have shown that in terms of acute toxicity the use of these compounds are of low concern. They are of low oral, dermal and inhalation toxicity. From a structural activity point of view, the length of the alkyl chain did not exert any meaningful influence on acute toxicity.

Additional information

The acute toxicity of alcohol polyglycosides (APGs) has been extensively evaluated in numerous studies with rats and rabbits.

The oral LD50 values, tested with C8-10-alkyl glycosides and C10-16-alkyl glycosides were both above 2 g/kg. The same result was achieved for the dermal route when tested with C8-10-alkyl glycosides and C10-16-alkyl glycosides.

The test materials were typically solutions administered orally through gavage. The majority of studies conformed to OECD guidelines and/or EC method and were in compliance with GLP regulation.

According to REGULATION (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex VIII, Section 8.5.2, Column 2, testing by the inhalation route is appropriate if exposure of humans via inhalation is likely taking into account the vapour pressure of the substance and/or the possibility of exposure to aerosols, particles or droplets of an inhalable size. The vapour pressure of the liquid substance is very low (< 0.01 Pa at 20°C). Exposure to vapour can thus be precluded.

In summary, no classification is warranted for either route of acute toxicity.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Classification criteria according to 67/548/EEC and (EC)1272/2008 are not fulfilled.
