Additional information

The flammability of liquids is assessed by reference to the flash point (Section 7.9). There is no indication on the basis of structure and experience in handling and the use that the substance is flammable in contact with air or water. Therefore, in accordance with Section 2 of REACH Annex XI, the study does not need to be conducted.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The substance is classified R12 (Extremely Flammable), according to Directive 67/548/EEC, and Flammable Liquid Category 1 (H224: Extremely flammable liquid and vapour), according to Regulation 1272/2008. This is on the basis of a flash point of -28°C. The key boiling point value is of 35.5°C; however, as this is very close to the cut off (≤35°C) for classification as extremely flammable and other (less reliable) sources quote boiling points in the range 32 to 38°C, a classification of extremely flammable is proposed.

The substance reacts vigorously in the presence of water, including moisture in the air. This may present a physical hazard and is reflected in the Classification of R14 ‘Reacts violently with water’. One of the products of the reaction is hydrogen chloride, which is classified as corrosive.

 

Due to the presence of Si-H bonds, on reaction with water chlorodimethylsilane may also produce hydrogen gas, which is classified as R12, extremely flammable. Therefore, the substance also bears the classification R15 ‘In contact with water releases flammable gases.’
