Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Per multiple guideline tests, greater than 91 percent of 1,4-butynediol biodegraded within 19 days

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Biodegradation in water:
readily biodegradable

Additional information

Guideline study results indicate the 1,4 -butynediol (B3D) undergoes rapid biodegradation in water. In an OECD 301E guideline study, B3D was readily biodegradable (Hüls AG 1984) and, in an OECD 302B guideline study, B3D biodegraded rapidly and completely such that it can be classified as readily biodegradable (BASF, 1977). These results are supported by an estimate of ready biodegradability using US EPA BioWin (v4.10) which predicts B3D can be considered readily biodegradable (ISP 2010).
