Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
toxic effects on livestock and pets
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
other information
Study period:
1985
Reliability:
other: The reliability of the original study report and endpoint record is Klimisch 2. As read-across for this specific endpoint is not supported, Klimisch rating is not applied. For justification against read-across see “Justification for type of information”.
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Justification for reliability see “Justification for type of information”
Justification for type of information:
The study was conducted with cyanamide, which is considered an analogue substance to calcium cyanamide. However, for this specific endpoint, read across from cyanamide to calcium cyanamide is not appropriate. The comprehensive justification against read across can be found in chapter 13.2 under the title “Scientific Rationale for not using Cyanamide as Read-Across Substance for Calcium cyanamide on Toxicological Endpoints”. This endpoint study record is nevertheless copied to the calcium cyanamide dossier to demonstrate full consideration of all cyanamide study data in the substance assessment and classification of calcium cyanamide.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The lethal dose of cyanamide in pigs (tested in one pig) was found to be 200 mg/kg bw.
Executive summary:

This study was performed with Alzogur because this is the product to which pigs can be exposed when no rinsing is performed after the application of Alzogur in pig houses. The acute oral toxicity of cyanamide was investigated in pigs in doses of 25, 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg bw. Five young animals were used for the study. At doses of 50 mg /kg bw and above cyanamide provoked icterus, anorexia, fever, polypnea, ataxia, trembling and spastic paresis. The lethal dose was 200 mg/kg bw.
