Endpoint:
toxicity to terrestrial arthropods: long-term
Type of information:
experimental study

according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 232 (Collembolan Reproduction Test in Soil)
Deviations:
no
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)
Analytical monitoring:
yes
Vehicle:
yes
Details on preparation and application of test substrate:
The stock solution was prepared in ethanol. An appropriate amount of the stock and the dosage solutions respectively was used to soak a
portion of the quartz sand of the artificial soil. After evaporation of the solvent by placing under a fume hood, the quartz sand was coated by the test item.
Test organisms (species):
Folsomia candida
Animal group:
Collembola (soil-dwelling springtail)
Details on test organisms:
- Age of the test organisms; Juvenile with an age of 10 – 12 days
Study type:
laboratory study
Limit test:
no
Total exposure duration:
28 d
Test temperature:
20 ± 2 ºC
pH (if soil or dung study):
artificial soil adjusted to pH 6 ± 0.5
Humidity:
40 – 60% of WHCmax
Photoperiod and lighting:
16 : 8 h light/dark with a constant light intensity at the substrate surface of 400 – 800 Lx
Details on test conditions:
Artificial soil consists of:
- 5% Sphagnum peat (no visible plant remains; finely ground and air-dried)
- 20% Kaolin-Clay (kaolinite content > 30%)
- approximately 74% Quartz sand (fine sand content with particles between 50 and
200 μm higher than 50%)
- <1% Calcium carbonate (CaCO3)
Nominal and measured concentrations:
Nominal: 56.2, 100, 178, 316, 5062 and 1000 mg test item/kg soil (dw).
Plus a solvent control and dionised water control.

Number of replicates: 4 treatment and 4 deionised water controls; 8 solvent controls containing 10
collembolans each.

The concenration of the stock solution, used as application solution for the highest test concentration was analytically verified in duplicate. The recovery ranged from 100.00.to 100.75 % of the nominal concentration.

Description of key information

In experimental studies with Folsomia candida an EC50 (28 d) of 909.9 mg/kg dw was determined.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Short-term EC50 or LC50 for soil dwelling arthropods:
909.9 mg/kg soil dw
Long-term EC10, LC10 or NOEC for soil dwelling arthropods:
562 mg/kg soil dw

Additional information

In an experimental study according to the OECD Guideline 232 and GLP regulations the toxicity to terrestrial arthropods was assessed. The springtail Folsomia candida was exposed to the test item for 28 d in a laboratory study. The effect on reproduction was measured and an EC50 of 909.9 mg/kg soil dw was determined, as well as a NOEC of 562 mg/kg. (ECT, 2011).
