For the production of the anode in a Lithium-Ion battery, the metal needs to have good conductivity and be able to resist the corrosive properties of lithium. Copper is the most cost-effective choice for this purpose. However, copper has a big redox potential and needs to be protected to ensure batteries’ performance, safety and long term capacity.
The rolls of copper foil are treated through electro-chemical processing steps that apply a protective chemical conversion coating with chromium trioxide to both sides of the copper foil. The passivation bath contains less than 0.1% w/w of chromium trioxide. The dilution operations of solid chromium trioxide flakes are done automatically through closed system in a separate dedicated space equipped with air extraction.

This is an application for authorisation for a future use. The site where production will take place is the subject of a large investment by the applicant and will especially focus on custom-made state of the art protection for the authorised use.

Chromium trioxide has no independent function at the formulation stage. During the passivation, the substance fulfils three major technical roles in copper foil used for LiOn batteries:
  • Prevent oxidisation of the foil during storage or further processing and during the use of Lithium-ion batteries anodes;
  • Prevent the propagation of cupric ions throughout the battery during its life-time use;
  • Improve battery performance (capacity, cell’s impedance and peel strength of anode film).
