Adopted opinions and previous consultations on applications for authorisation

This page provides further information on the applications for authorisation or review reports, which have undergone public consultation. The applications for authorisation are in the opinion development phase until the final opinions of the Committees for Risk Assessment and Socio-economic Analysis have been adopted and sent to the European Commission. The European Commission's decision-making process can be followed through the comitology register, where further information is published about the REACH Committee's past and upcoming meetings.

Pentazinc chromate octahydroxide
EC Number
CAS Number
Entry Nr in Annex XIV
Use name
Use of pentazinc chromate octahydroxide in stoved epoxy primer for corrosion protection of aircraft engine components in aerospace and aeroderivative applications
Broad information on use applied for (conditions of use and function)
This relates to the use of epoxy primer containing hexavalent chromium for the purpose of corrosion protection in engine components for aeronautic applications (aircraft engine components in aerospace and aero derivative applications). This process, intended to protect the part from corrosion (typically aluminium alloys, magnesium alloys and steel alloys) and improve adhesion between metal and composite parts, may be carried out during production, maintenance or repair.

The treated components (e.g. fan cases, oil tanks, gearboxes, etc.) are safety critical parts of aircraft engines and therefore require a reliable and established treatment process. Primers are a pigmented composition of liquid consistency applied as a thin layer which converts to a solid, adherent and tough film. The role of the primer in coating protection is to isolate the substrate (i.e. the treated component) from the environment.

The most important key functionality of the primer is to provide corrosion protection which is highly dependent on the physical-chemical properties of the chromate compound, pentazinc chromate octahydroxide. Additional functionalities of the primer include: active corrosion inhibition, adhesion promotion, chemical and temperature resistance, compatibility with substrates, flexibility and scratch resistance.

This type of primer is used at sites in the UK (including Rolls Royce facilities, their sub-contractors and other Aerospace customers) where it is applied by spray in spray booths or by touch up using a brush; also, machining of parts may be occasionally required.

Small quantities of the primer (typically <0.5 tpa) are distributed to suppliers across Europe, directly by Indestructible Paint and via distributors for use in the Aerospace supply chain. These suppliers are expected to use the primer in touch up operations during maintenance and repair, although spray application cannot be ruled out. Suppliers may also carry out machining (e.g. local removal of primer prior to touch-up).
