Hansgrohe SE uses solid chromium trioxide for the pre-treatment (etching) of plastic parts before they are coated by electroplating. Plastic substrates are electrical insulators, meaning that they cannot be electroplated under normal conditions, therefore they have to be etched to make electroplating possible. Freshly molded plastic parts are etched with chromic acid by dipping the parts into a heated bath (ca. 60°C). This etching step is a prerequisite to achieve acceptable lifetimes of coated articles for manual handling (sanitary objects, e.g. shower heads).

The short process time allows the synchronization of the process with the plating steps. The process is integrated into the plating line which avoids handling and prevents any contamination of the etched surface, which would deteriorate the subsequent plating layers.

As a wet chemical dipping process the chromic acid etching exhibits similar risks as the plating process itself. Therefore, the same risk management measures can be applied for both processes.

Substance function: Chromic acid, being a strong oxidizer for any organic matter, etches the plastic and gives a characteristic roughness and a chemically modified surface which improve the adhesive strength of the coatings. The unique surface roughness and the chemical modification result in a high bonding strength between the metal coating and the plastic surface. This allows very durable and robust metal layers for the use of sanitary installations in home and industry.
