Use name
Industrial use of Ammonium Dichromate in the process of manufacturing Cathode Ray Tubes for head up displays intended to be used in military and civilian aircrafts
Broad information on use applied for (conditions of use and function)
Under Use-2, BAE Systems Display Technologies Ltd. uses ammonium dichromate at the site in Middleton (United Kingdom) as a photo-sensitiser in the process of manufacturing Cathode Ray Tubes (CRTs) for use in Head-Up Displays (HUDs) for military and civil aircraft. The functional properties sought-after with ammonium dichromate include:

  • Solubility in water
  • Reactivity with light radiation
  • Controlled exposure time
  • Resolution and adhesion features
  • Layer thinness
  • Low residue after air baking
  • Low level of contaminants
The manufacture of CRTs is carried out by the Applicant:

  • at one facility in the United Kingdom
  • in dedicated bespoke facilities with cleanroom conditions
  • by a total of 2 operators.
The total annual use of ammonium dichromate amounts to a maximum of 0.6 kg. These CRTs are used in a wide range of HUDs including Holographic HUDs used in several civilian and military aircraft platforms in service worldwide. The remaining lifespan of said aircrafts is 25 to 30 years post-sunset date. These HUDs are a primary flight instrument as they display all flight parameters such as speed, heading, pitch bars, climb/dive/roll/flight path marker, flight mode and are therefore essential for the airworthiness of aircrafts.
