Adopted opinions and previous consultations on applications for authorisation

This page provides further information on the applications for authorisation or review reports, which have undergone consultation. The applications for authorisation are in the opinion development phase until the final opinions of the Committees for Risk Assessment and Socio-economic Analysis have been adopted and sent to the European Commission. Its decision-making process can be followed through the comitology register, where further information is published about the REACH Committee's past and upcoming meetings.

On 1 February 2020, the United Kingdom (UK) withdrew from the EU. The transition period provided by the withdrawal agreement ended on 31 December 2020. As of 1 January 2021, an application for an authorisation submitted by a person established in the UK (except Northern Ireland) is no longer valid in the EU, unless that application has been transferred to a legal entity established in the EU or Northern Ireland before the end of the transition period. Therefore, authorisation applications and decisions in so far as these concern persons established in the UK (except Northern Ireland) are no longer considered valid. The table below will be updated at a later stage.

Functional chrome plating with decorative character
Broad information on use applied for (conditions of use and function)
Functional chrome plating with decorative character represents the surface treatment of metal, plastic or composite surfaces with a water based chromium trioxide containing mixture (e.g. chromic acid) to deposit metallic chromium and related on-site formulation. The final metallic chromium surface deposits are typically between 0.2- 2.0 µm thick. In black chrome plating deposits are usually up to 5 µm thick.

Functional chrome plating with decorative character is an industrial process which is widely used in applications including automotive, sanitary, household appliances, furniture and homeware, cosmetics, white goods, general engineering and others. It can be applied to effectively treat articles or components of many different sizes and shapes.

During functional chrome plating with decorative character, chromium trioxide is applied in one or more plating baths as part of an electrochemical treatment process. Functional chrome plating with decorative character may also include use of chromium trioxide in pre-treatment processes (e.g. to etch the substrate prior to plating).

The result of the functional chrome plating with decorative character process is a metallic chrome coating which provides a range of desired properties to the finished article. It enhances corrosion resistance, durability and achieves a clearly recognizable improvement in the surface appearance of the finished article in combination with other important functional characteristics. For example, the coating does not affect the surface morphology of the substrate. It delivers a surface entirely free of hexavalent chrome that can be easily machined and assembled.

Examples of sector specific chrome coating applications include, amongst others, the following:

  • Automotive: exterior parts, such as: brand labels, rims, front skirts, rear view mirrors and radiator grills; interior parts such as gear lever knobs, trim strips, decorative frames
  • Sanitary: bathroom taps, shower heads, towel rails, soap dishes, mirror frames
  • Household appliances: shavers, parts of coffee machines
  • Furniture and homeware: chairs, kitchen furniture
  • Cosmetics: perfume caps, lipstick caps, nail files and scissors
  • White goods: frame of washing machine doors, interior parts in fridges, oven shelves -General engineering: precision parts & electrotechnical parts, microscopes, laser optics. Other: e
  • lectrical devices, lamps and light fittings, tools
