The main functional properties sought-after for the mixtures concerned by this use include:

- Low temperature-cured coatings for corrosion protection or
- High temperature corrosion & oxidation resistance with reduction of surface roughness and / or with antifouling property

The actual functional requirements depend on the market sector.

The mixtures impacted by the sunset date of chromium trioxide are based on the coating ability to sacrificially protect substrates from corrosion. This sacrificial behaviour is provided by the coating conductive aluminium structure, made possible by a dense dispersion of aluminium particles within a matrix (binder) of chromate-phosphate ceramic.

These mixtures are part of proprietary coating systems (basecoat and/or top coat). The most commonly used basecoat in different industries is the SermeTel W. Contrary to its OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) customers, PST does not use this basecoat as a standalone surface treatment process, but associated with a topcoat, thus forming a complete coating process.

Chromium trioxide is used in a mixture (concentration < 5%) to carry out spraying (by manual process) in one PST shop in the EU (Lincoln, UK) by 26 workers. PST implements standardised RMM to limit the risk for their workers.

The main argument to support this AfA is that at the moment no adequate alternatives have been identified that achieve the level of performances described above. Unfortunately, alternatives available for another use applied for by PST do not provide the level of performances required by this use.
