New public consultations on alternatives to the uses of trichloroethylene (TCE) and diarsenic trioxide

ECHA welcomes information on alternatives to trichloroethylene (TCE) and diarsenic trioxide for the specific uses mentioned below. The consultation period closes on 8 October 2014 (23:59 Helsinki time).

Helsinki, 13 August 2014 – ECHA has received two applications for authorisation to the uses of trichloroethylene (TCE) and diarsenic trioxide.

Trichloroethylene (TCE)

  • Use of trichloroethylene as a solvent for the removal and recovery of resin from dyed cloth
  • Use of trichloroethylene as a solvent in a process to recover and purify resin from process water

Diarsenic trioxide

  • Use of diarsenic trioxide as a processing aid for the removal of carbon dioxide from synthesis gas used in the production of ammonia

 

ECHA's website gives further information about the description of the function of the substance, exposures scenarios, possible alternatives identified by the applicants, together with socio-economic and other background information.

Comments should be submitted online. Unless the information is confidential, ECHA will publish the comments received as well as the applicants' responses to the comments. The ECHA Committees for Risk Assessment (RAC) and Socio-economic Analysis (SEAC) will review and consider the comments in their opinion-making process. Based on the Committees' final opinions, the European Commission will take a decision on whether or not to grant the applicants an authorisation for the uses applied for.
