Guidance on Safe Use

First-aid measures

General information: Treat symptomatically.

Inhalation: Move affected person to fresh air at once. Rinse nose and mouth with water. Get medical attention if any discomfort continues.

Ingestion: Rinse mouth thoroughly with water. Give plenty of water to drink. Give milk instead of water if readily available. Keep affected person under observation. Do not induce vomiting. If vomiting occurs, the head should be kept low so that vomit does not enter the lungs. Get medical attention immediately. Show the Safety Data Sheet to the medical personnel.

Skin contact: Remove affected person from source of contamination. Remove contaminated clothing immediately and wash skin with soap and water. Continue to rinse for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention if irritation persists after washing.

Eye contact: Remove affected person from source of contamination. Remove any contact lenses and open eyelids wide apart. Continue to rinse for at least 15 minutes. Get medical attention immediately. Show the Safety Data Sheet to the medical personnel.

Protection of first aiders: First aid personnel should wear appropriate protective equipment during any rescue.

Most important symptoms and effects, both acute and delayed:

- Inhalation: Irritation of nose, throat and airway.

- Ingestion: Nausea, vomiting.  Exposure to excess iodide may produce hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism (producing too little or too much thyroxine hormone) and symptoms include tiredness, restlessness, nervousness, irritability & sleeping poorly.

- Skin contact: Skin irritation. May cause skin sensitisation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals.

- Eye contact: Causes serious eye damage. Immediate first aid is imperative.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing media:

- Suitable extinguishing media: The product is not flammable. Extinguish with the following media: Water spray, foam, dry powder or carbon dioxide. Use fire-extinguishing media suitable for the surrounding fire.

- Unsuitable extinguishing media: None known.

Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture:

- Specific hazards: Thermal decomposition or combustion products may include the following substances: Toxic and corrosive gases or vapours.

- Hazardous combustion products: Iodine. Oxides of: Copper.

Advice for firefighters:

- Protective actions during firefighting: Keep upwind to avoid inhalation of gases, vapours, fumes and smoke. Avoid breathing fire gases or vapours. Thermal decomposition or combustion products may include the following substances: Toxic and corrosive gases or vapours. Containers close to fire should be removed or cooled with water. Control run-off water by containing and keeping it out of sewers and watercourses. If risk of water pollution occurs, notify appropriate authorities.

- Special protective equipment for firefighters: Wear positive-pressure self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) and appropriate protective clothing. Wear chemical protective suit.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions: Avoid inhalation of dust. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wear a suitable dust mask. Wear suitable protective equipment, including gloves, goggles/face shield, respirator, boots, clothing or apron, as appropriate.

For non-emergency personnel: If leakage cannot be stopped, evacuate area.

Environmental precautions: Avoid spreading dust or contaminated materials. Do not discharge into drains or watercourses or onto the ground. Spillages or uncontrolled discharges into watercourses must be immediately alerted to the appropriate regulatory body.

Methods for cleaning up: Wear suitable protective equipment, including gloves, goggles/face shield, respirator, boots, clothing or apron, as appropriate. Do not touch or walk into spilled material. Avoid generation and spreading of dust. Wash thoroughly after dealing with a spillage. Collect and place in suitable waste disposal containers and seal securely. Label the containers containing waste and contaminated materials and remove from the area as soon as possible. Small Spillages (<10 kgs): Remove spillage with vacuum cleaner or collect with a shovel and broom, or similar. Collect and place in suitable waste disposal containers and seal securely.  Flush away spillage with plenty of water. Large Spillages (>10 kgs): Inform authorities if large amounts are involved. Avoid the spillage or runoff entering drains, sewers or watercourses. Collect and place in suitable waste disposal containers and seal securely. Label the containers containing waste and contaminated materials and remove from the area as soon as possible. If involved in a fire, shut off flow if it can be done without risk. Dispose of waste via a licensed waste disposal contractor.

Handling and storage

Precautions for safe handling: Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. Wear protective clothing as described in "Exposure controls / personal protection" below. Do not wear contact lenses. Avoid contact with skin and eyes. Avoid inhalation of dust. Good personal hygiene procedures should be implemented. Wash hands and any other contaminated areas of the body with soap and water before leaving the work site. Eye wash facilities and emergency shower must be available when handling this product. Avoid release to the environment.

Conditions for safe storage, including any incompatibilities:

- Storage precautions: Keep away from food and drink. Keep only in the original container. Avoid contact with oxidising agents. Do not store near heat sources or expose to high temperatures. Use containers made of the following materials: Polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Polyethylene. Container must be kept tightly closed.  Store in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Appropriate engineering controls: Provide adequate general and local exhaust ventilation. Provide eyewash station and safety shower.

Eye/face protection: Tight-fitting safety glasses.

Hand protection: It is recommended that chemical-resistant, impervious gloves are worn. It is recommended that gloves are made of the following material: Nitrile rubber.

Other skin and body protection: Wear appropriate clothing to prevent any possibility of skin contact. Appropriate footwear and additional protective clothing complying with an approved standard should be worn if a risk assessment indicates skin contamination is possible.

Hygiene measures: Do not eat, drink or smoke when using this product. Wash at the end of each work shift and before eating, smoking and using the toilet. Change work clothing daily before leaving workplace. Promptly remove any clothing that becomes wet or contaminated. Contaminated clothing should be placed in a closed container for disposal or decontamination. Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.

Respiratory protection: If ventilation is inadequate, suitable respiratory protection must be worn. Wear a respirator fitted with the following cartridge: Particulate filter, type P2.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity:

- The following materials may react with the product: Oxidising materials. Acids.

Chemical stability: Stable at normal ambient temperatures and when used as recommended.

Possibility of hazardous reactions: Oxidising materials. Acids.

Conditions to avoid: Avoid excessive heat for prolonged periods of time.

Disposal considerations

General information: Disposal of this product, process solutions, residues and by-products should at all times comply with the requirements of environmental protection and waste disposal legislation and any local authority requirements. Care should be taken when handling emptied containers that have not been thoroughly cleaned or rinsed out. Dispose of waste via a licensed waste disposal contractor. The generation of waste should be minimised or avoided wherever possible. When handling waste, the safety precautions applying to handling of the product should be considered.

Disposal methods: Reuse or recycle products wherever possible. Collect and place in suitable waste disposal containers and seal securely. Avoid discharge into drains or watercourses or onto the ground. Dispose of waste to licensed waste disposal site in accordance with the requirements of the local Waste Disposal Authority. Confirm disposal procedures with environmental engineer and local regulations. Do not empty into drains. Use appropriate containment to avoid environmental contamination.
