ECHA is committed to providing a service that meets the needs and expectations of its various stakeholders and society with its increased interest in sustainability and environmental questions in a balanced and impartial way and in strict compliance with applicable legislation.

The structure of the Integrated Management System (IMS) is based on the Internal Control Framework of the Commission. It covers quality and environmental management, which conform to the internationally recognised ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standards. ECHA’s integrated management approach is presented in the:

  • Integrated Management System (IMS) Strategy and Framework, which consolidates and integrates the different elements of the Agency’s management system;
  • Environmental Policy, which describes the commitment to environmental protection and sustainability.

ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 Certification

The British Standards Institute (BSI) has certified the ECHA Integrated Management System against the ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015 standards. The third-party recognition provides assurance that the Agency has established a comprehensive quality and environmental management framework and applies good business practices with the aim of always providing its services to the satisfaction of its stakeholders.

Environmental Management System

ECHA’s environmental management system (EMS) has been in place since 2015 and it determines how ECHA will implement its environmental objectives. It is a component of the Agency’s Integrated Management System (IMS) Strategy and Framework and is supported by ECHA’s Environmental Policy.

The EMS at the Agency aims to continuously improve the environmental impact of the agency and increase sustainability in the day-to-day operations of ECHA by carefully using natural resources and making corresponding choices when selecting products and services from external vendors.

The long-term actions of the EMS are guided by the pledge made by our Executive Director to the 58th Management Board for the Agency to become carbon-neutral by 2030 and further reinforces our environmental ambitions.

Background

In line with of ECHA’s Financial Regulation (FR), the Agency shall attach to its Programming Document a strategy for achieving efficiency gains and synergies, and a strategy for the organisational management and internal control systems including an anti-fraud strategy. In addition, FR defines also what are the elements of effective internal control, as laid down in the Internal Control Framework.

In view of the above and following ECHA’s reorganisation in 2019, the Agency developed its Integrated Management System Strategy to support the performance of the Agency in line with its strategic priorities and the compliance with the obligations stemming from the Financial Regulation. The aim of the strategy is to set the high-level commitments to set the direction which the Agency will follow in the coming years, as well as to consolidate and integrate to the extent possible the different elements of ECHA’s management system.

The Integrated Management System Framework is the tool which implements the Integrated Management System Strategy. It provides high-level information on the different components of the IMS, and on the principles and characteristics of ECHA’s governance, strategy, planning and risk management, operations and operational structure, evaluation and improvement. Current ISO certification schemes support the strategy implementation.
